League Debut

Congratulations to Goal and committee member Steven Rypp on his league debut last weekend. Steven moved up to the main squad at the beginning of this year and was the only person in the squad to have not umpired league football but  kept his game at a high standard and got that league debut he has been striving for. I have no doubts it would have come sooner had he not had the majority of two seasons off through study/travels to Nth America. Plenty more league games to come I hope for you Ryppy!

Golf Day Announcement

Unfortunately, do to a lack of interest and/or committment from our members, we have been left with no option but to cancel the 2011 edition of the SANFLUA Golf Day. 6 weeks notice was given with clear instructions of forty RSVP's with money to Nadia by Saturday March 26. We received approximately 18.

Please take this as a word of warning for future functions. We want to run successful and subsidised functions for our members, but we can not simply rely on last minute RSVPs for these to go ahead. Nadia and other Social Secretaries in the past put a lot of work in to run these functions and ask for one thing in return, some commitment to attendance from our members.

The committee apologises to those that did commit as it would have been a great function to be involved in and we hope this does not affect your attendance at future functions. Make sure you let your mates know how good it could have been had they committed on time.

Lets look forward to the next funciton, MOVIE DINNER NIGHT!

Lawn Bowls Wrap-Up

Once again, another beauiful autumn evening resulted in a good 40 members turning out to Henley Bowling Club for the Annual Lawn Bowls Evening. There were two main differences this year, one being the amount of sledging that went on, and the other being a very one-sided final.

The first round and quarter finals were pretty tame affairs with regular 'FrankinSenses' (Come Onnn! That's good coming from you! Prevent the gaps! etc) amusing the crowd as another ball rolled into the gutter.

Once the Semi Finals came around, it was down to business and the Manchester United of SANFLUA Lawn Bowls (The Rogers and Roberts Foursome) again had to face a night where every opposition wanted to beat them more than any other. And again it happened at the penultimate stage with a Mathew Oates drive ending their dreams for 2011.

So it was left with "Crazy Cats" (Oates, Schramm, Hayes and Dalgleish) and "No I in SANFLUA" (Hay, Fila, Fleer, Ormsby) in the final. 3 ends in and Crazy Cats had an unbeatable 8-0 lead and were crowned champions by the biggest margin in many years.

Many thanks must go to Matt from Subway West Lakes and George from Kalymnos Pastries for supplying the supper and to the Henley Bowling Club for their hospitality.

Membership 2011

The Annual Membership BBQ was held at AAMI Stadium last night encouraging all to jump on board the SANFLUA train in 2011. Unforeseen circumstances has resulted members being unable to pay membership from their fortnightly pay but we still managed to have 15 people pay in cash on the night. These members are now in the draw to win tickets to the SANFLUA Golf Day or Lawn Bowls Night. Due to popular demand, the competition has now been extended to Saturday March 5 at 5pm. If you pay for your membership prior to this time, you will also receive an entry into the draw.

If you need the EFT details or a Membership form, please email your basic details to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and you will be notified accordingly.

Many thanks must go to Heather Trewartha and Ken Potts for helping with the Barbecue as well as Slape Smallgoods and Subway West Lakes for supplying the food and drink respectively.

The Sobier One Wins

David Sobieraj is the 2011 Andrew Vickers’ Memorial Umpires’ Race champion. He managed to hold off pre-race favourite Michael Schramm and Frank Manikas to win the final in one of the strongest races in many years. With more than six “ex” pro-runners strengthening the field, each of the three heats were hotly contested making for an exciting final. Tony Cooper made yet another final and lead for the first 350m (150m in his case) but was first overrun in by Sobieraj and pipped at the post by Schramm, Manikas, debutant Jason Hayes and Adam Fitzgerald. Simon Thompson, Shane Thiele and Chris Cook were the other finalists.

Thanks to Mark Thomson for donating the sash as he does every year and many thanks to all participants for making a great spectacle. There was very good feedback from the spectators about the attitude and performance of the umpires in the heats and final which augers well for the SANFLUA and the Camden Classic Carnival in years to come. Colin Rowston will be very pleased with the turnout in 2011.

AGM

Tuesday January 18 at the Royal Hotel in Torrensville saw the running of the 2010 Annual General Meeting. A smaller than usual number turned out to vote in three new members to the committee and approve the 2010 Annual Report and Financial standing.

James Gwydir, Andrew Crosby and Chris Bull decided to retire from the committee leaving three positions vacant. The SANFLUA Committee is proud to announce Tom Sharpe, Steven Rypp and Chris Rabin as new Committee Members for Season 2011.

The members present were also introduced to the new look SANFLUA website. www.sanflua.org.au has now been launched and I encourage all of you to have a look at all the features and benefits this will have for the SANFLUA as a whole. This is a relatively basic website, so if any of you have any feedback, please feel free to offer it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
